Athenians beat Central Catholic

Crawfordsville boys’ tennis team battled Central Catholic on Wednesday and won 4-1.

The Athenians swept the singles contests. No. 1 Rowan Gambrel defeated Lucas Gerkey 6-2, 6-1., No. 2 Wyatt Motz beat Evan McLaughlin 6-4, 6-0 and Jude Coursey won over Alex Schummer 6-2, 6-4.

Crawfordsville’s No. 1 doubles team of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon beat Trevon Powers and Jonah Gerkey 6-3, 6-4. Athenian No. 2 doubles comprised of Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt lost a hard fought set 4-6, 6-4 and 4-6.

“I am really proud of the way our guys played tonight,” Athenian Coach Craig Brainard said. “Rowan composed himself playing one singles and played at a great level. Rowan made a big step forward tonight and the rest of the team stepped it up too. I am excited to see our guys making these strides going into the half point of our season.”

Crawfordsville traveled to Southmont on Thursday. CHS will host the annual Steve Macy Invitational on Saturday.

 

Lebanon sweeps Chargers

North Montgomery was swept by Lebanon on Wednesday in a Sagamore Conference match-up. The Tigers won all matches.

The Chargers’ No. 1 singles player Beckett Martin lost to Owen Bigler 2-6, 1-6. North’s No. 2 singles player Cade Cole was beaten by Wesley Byrd 1-6, 2-6 and Charger Carter Thompson lost to Thomas Devlin 4-6, 4-6 in the No. 3 singles match.

In doubles play, North Montgomery’s No. 1 team of Dane Elliott and Austin Biddle lost to Jack Ferrell and Ian Kincade 6-1, 6-0. The Chargers’ No. 2 doubles team of Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller lost to Owen Kincade and Parker Lawson 1-6, 2-6.

“Lebanon is a tough team with a lot of experience,” Charger Coach Devan Plant said. “We are going to have to put this match behind us and come out with more motivation in our next games.”

The Chargers (2-2, 2-1 SAC) played Delphi on Thursday and will play at the McCutcheon Invitational on Saturday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Patriots defeat Athenians

Crawfordsville lost to Terre Haute North 3-0 on Wednesday.

The home-standing Athenians lost 9-25, 14-25, 12-25.

Reese Price led Crawfordsville with nine kills and Emma Buser had seven digs.

Crawfordsville traveled to Attica on Thursday and will host North Vermillion on Monday.

 

Mounties lose to Stars

Southmont was defeated by Western Boone in straight sets Wednesday. Scores were 9-25, 8-25 and 11-25.

Southmont traveled to Cascade on Thursday and will be home Saturday against Clinton Prairie.

 

North loses to Riverton Parke

North Montgomery traveled to 1A No. 2 Riverton Parke and lost in straight sets 3-0.

The Chargers dropped to 3-7 and will be back in action Tuesday at home against Fountain Central.

 

GOLF

Chargers defeat Lebanon

North Montgomery celebrated senior night Wednesday with a win over Sagamore Conference foe Lebanon at Rocky Ridge.

The Chargers were led by Mallory Inskeep’s 48 and Marlee Reed’s 50. The senior Chargers had solid rounds as Kayla Sankey and Krestlyn Bradford each recorded a score of 57.

“We saw a lot of good things from several players tonight, and it’s great to pick up a big win on senior night,” North Montgomery coach Bob Ryker said. “This was a real team effort and it shows the hard work we have been putting in. It is paying off.”

North played at the Ravines Golf Club on Thursday against Southmont and McCutcheon. The Chargers will travel Tuesday to Cool Lake Golf Course to take on Western Boone.

 

SOCCER

Wabash defeats Rose-Hulman

The Wabash Little Giant soccer team defeated visiting Rose-Hulman 2-1 in the season home opener. The win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Engineers dating back to 2015.

Wabash’s Jose Escalante scored in the 29th minute followed by a goal by Little Giant Angel Vazquez who scored just four minutes later.

Rose scored late in the first half but a tough Little Giant preserved the win in the second half.

Wabash is 2-0. Wabash will host the 2024 Robbie Dreher Soccer Classic at 1 p.m. Saturday. Other teams participating will be Alma College, Bluffton College and Monmouth College.
