South volleyball beats rival North Montgomery

Posted

NEW MARKET — Feeding off the energy in the Bob J. Tandy Gymnasium, Southmont volleyball swept the North Montgomery Chargers on Tuesday 25-17, 25-22, and 25-17 to move to 4-5 on the young season. The Chargers fall to 4-7.

While the Chargers led early in set one, the Mounties took the lead after being tied 3-3 and never looked back behind some strong serving and net play by the entire Mountie squad. Set two proved to be exciting as both teams took turns leading, but the Mounties eventually found the lead after being tied 7-7. The Chargers would get within two late in the set, but the Mounties offense found holes in the Charger defense. Set three was all Mounties as freshman Ella Barry found her groove on offense.

Southmont Coach Erin Barry was pleased with the way her Mounties played as a team.

“This was a great overall team win for us,” Coach Barry said. “We play team-first, and I felt like everyone played their role, and we came out successful. Our energy was good, we executed the things we worked on, and we just came ready to play.”

The Mounties’ offense and defense was on point. Seniors Jenna Grino and Mallory Mason lead the defense with 13 and six digs, respectively. Junior Kendall Priebe contributed five digs. On the offensive side, Mason had 18 assists, while Barry had eight kills and Senior Catie Himes had five kills. Himes also had four aces on the night.

“We worked on a lot of serving in our practices since we played Covington,” Coach Barry said. “Our serve receive defense also worked the way we wanted, as North didn’t get many multiple serves in a row.”

North Montgomery Coach Taylor Pierce was disappointed in her Lady Chargers.

“We weren’t able to put together much,” Pierce said. “We had a lot errors that prevented us from having big plays that could have changed the game.”

North senior Kaydence Young led the Chargers with six kills and five service aces. “Kaydence is consistent for us,” Pierce said. “She’s aggressive out there on the floor.”

Junior Hope Delp also had six kills.

North Montgomery was back in action Wednesday at Riverton Parke and the Mounties hosted conference-foe Western Boone on Wednesday.
