CROSS COUNTRY

County teams Leap Into September

All three Montgomery County cross country teams competed in Tuesday’s Leap Into September Invitational. The Athenians finished second in both the boys’ and girls’ meets.

The Athenian boys’ average time of 19:06 was second to Lebanon’s average of 19:01. Top Athenian runners were Hutton Haas 18:00, Josh Inskeep 18:43, Jantzen Thayer 19:37 and Max Brummett 19:37. Haas placed fourth as an individual and Inskeep and Thayer placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

Southmont’s average time of 19:35 was good for fourth place.

Vince Reimondo, who was fourth individually, finished the course with a time of 17:50. Other Mountie times were Ethan Keck 18:55, Trent Reeves 19:38, Sam Crum 20:10 and Clay Allen 21:24.

North Montgomery placed sixth as a team with an average time of 20:39.

Charger Jack Rogers completed the course in 18:23, which placed him sixth individually. Nolan Yarger was 22nd with a time of 20:12 and Blake Welch recorded a time of 21:25 which placed him 30th. Other Charger times were Kale Mitchell 21:34 and Kyle Ratliff 21:42.

Crawfordsville’s Katherine Novak led county finishers with a time of 22:36 which placed her fifth. The Athenians average time of 24:59 only trailed Lebanon’s 22:36 average time.

Other Crawfordsville times and places were Remy Swinford 24:58 for 16th, Caroline Novak 25:03 for 17th, Melanie Dowd 25:49 for 20th and Soren Olofson 26:33 for 23rd.

North Montgomery girls placed fifth as a team with an average time of 27:10.

Finishing in 10th place was Katelyn Woolwine’s time of 24:03. Sarah Hopper placed 14th with a time of 24:50.

Other Charger finishers were Kendra McClamroch 28:01 for 26th, Avery Gaylor 29:11 for 30th and Zoey McFarland 29:46 for 32nd.

“Our runners performed well at this meet,” Charger Coach Tim Lueking said. “It was a great opportunity to race against some tough teams. The Southmont course is always a challenging course and brings out the best in runners. With such great competition, it pushes our runners to the next level.”

Southmont girls placed sixth with an average top five time of 28:01.

Mountie Darby Cottrell finished in 24:23 placing her in 13th place. Finishing 18th was Jaysa Crull.

Also scoring for the Mounties were Amarah Shannon 26:11 for 21st, Lennon Woods 28:15 for 27th and Kylee Reeves 35:56 for 38th.

Athenian Coach Jared McMurry was pleased with his teams results.

“A pair of second place finishes was a good reward for the tremendous effort we had on a tough course,” McMurry said. “It was also a good look at where we need to be come county and conference meets.

Next up for Crawfordsville will be Saturday’s Lafayette Harrison Invitational. North Montgomery will compete Saturday at Terre Haute North and Southmont will not be in action again until the Sept. 12 Charger Classic.

 

TENNIS

Patriots defeat Athenians

Crawfordsville hosted a tough Terre Haute North team Tuesday and fell 2-3.

No. 2 singles Rowan Gambrel and No. 3 singles Jude Coursey each won their matches. Gambrel won 6-1, 6-3 and Coursey won 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 in the closest match of the evening.

In doubles play, Crawfordsville’s No.1 team of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon lost 1-6, 4-6. The Athenian No. 2 team of Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt lost 2-6, 3-6.

“It was a hard-fought match and there is a lot to take away to learn from it,” Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said. “We love playing Terre Haute North because we always come out better, win or lose.”

The Athenians traveled to Central Catholic on Wednesday and will play at Southmont today.

 

Chargers top Danville

North Montgomery won a home match Tuesday against Sagamore Conference rival Danville 4-1.

The Chargers’ No. 2 singles player Cade Cole defeated Cole Flick 7-5, 6-3 and No. 3 singles Dane Elliott beat Max Carr 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The Chargers swept the doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Carter Thompson and Austin Biddle defeated Oliver Riggs and Lian Stierwalt 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles team of Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller beat Braden Drzakowski and Landon Kinser 6-1, 6-3.

North Montgomery Coach Devan Plant, who got married Saturday and postponed his honeymoon until after the tennis season, was pleased with his team since they were unable to play last week due to the weather.

“After having no matches last week, it was nice to be able to pick up where we left off to get another conference win,” Plant said.

North Montgomery (2-1, 2-0 SAC) played at Lebanon on Wednesday and will host Delphi today.

 

Mustangs beat rival Trojans

Fountain Central swept Covington 5-0 on Tuesday to move to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Wabash River Conference.

Mustang No. 1 singles Gabe McCollum defeated Urban Roarks 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Fountain Central’s No. 2 singles Skylar Hoagland beat Carson Schaeffer 6-0, 6-0 and No. 3 singles Ayden Batchelor defeated Lule Holycross 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, the Mustang success continued. The No. 1 doubles team of Levi McTagertt and Levi Miller defeated Michael Norton and Brody Goodrich and the No. 2 doubles team of William Armstrong and Jose Duarte-Grajales beat Ben Stewart and Grissom Cope 6-2, 6-0.

Fountain Central will host their own invitational on Saturday.

 

Mounties win over Seeger

Southmont defeated Seeger 3-2 on Tuesday, improving their record to 2-3.

The Mounties’ No. 2 singles player Caden Allen defeated Jack Odle 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 and No. 3 singles player Colton Cory beat Haydin Howard 6-0, 6-1.

South’s No. 2 doubles team of Alex Garcia and Mikey Harden secured the team win with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Jacob Potter and Cayden Grimmett.

The Mounties’ No. 1 singles player Gavin Downey was defeated by Zach Reynolds 1-6, 1-6. South’s No. 1 doubles team of Owen McCutchan and Dean McGaughey lost 3-6, 3-6 to Macyn Hughes and Garrett Cooksey.

The Mounties host Crawfordsville today.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Athenians fall to Lebanon

Crawfordsville lost 3-1 at Lebanon on Tuesday. Set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 14-25 and 23-25.

Athenian Reese Price had 12 kills and Ally Strickland finished with nine kills.

Crawfordsville’s Alexis Ratcliff and Olivia Hedrick each recorded two aces and Ellie Walker had 15 digs. Clair Peacock recorded 26 assists.

Crawfordsville welcomed Terre Haute North on Wednesday and travels to Attica today.

 

Parke Heritage sweeps Mustang

Fountain Central fell Tuesday to Parke Heritage at home in straight sets 16-25, 17-25, 11-25.

The Mustangs host another Wabash River Conference foe South Vermillion today.

 

GOLF

Chargers win 3-way match

North Montgomery played Fountain Central on Tuesday at Rivercrest Golf Course in Covington. The Chargers defeated Fountain Central and Faith Christian.

Chargers Mallory Inskeep and Marlee Reed tied for medalist honors with a score of 53. Krestyn Bradford shot a personal best of 54. Emma Pyle recorded a 62.

“We are making progress,” Charger coach Bob Ryker said. “Tonight was a great step forward, but there are still areas we can improve as we prepare for tougher competition ahead.”

Fountain Central was led by Bella Bacon who recorded her first birdie and shot a personal best 54.

Autumn Payne shot a 54 and Rya Jackson shot a 57.

“The girls continue to improve and look to play their best at Thursday’s last home match,” Mustang coach Meghan Doss said.

North Montgomery played at Frankfort against the Hot Dogs and Lebanon on Wednesday and will travel to The Ravines Golf Club on Thursday to battle Southmont and McCutcheon.

 

Mounties sweep meet

Southmont’s girls’ golf team won a three-way match Tuesday against Cloverdale and South Vermillion.

Southmont shot a 188, Cloverdale 217 and South Vermillion 236.

Leading the Mounties was medalist Addison Meadows with a 41. Addison Kendricks shot 45, Kate Myers 50 and Kelsey Thompson 52.
