Bomb threat disrupts downtown Crawfordsville

Posted

A bomb threat Tuesday afternoon shut down a portion of downtown Crawfordsville for at least two hours.

Sgt. Jeremy Piers, the public information officer from the Indiana State Police, said the Crawfordsville Police Department received a report of a bomb in a parked vehicle near the intersection of Green and Main streets.

Officers closed several streets and evacuated people from downtown buildings, including the courthouse. Streets were closed in the area from Market Street to Pike Street and from Washington Street to Water Street.

“They took all the precautions, locked down the area and closed off the streets and called the bomb squads from the Indiana State Police and the Tippecanoe County Police Department,” Piers said.

Members of the bomb squad arrived from Lafayette to investigate the threat. A remote-controlled bomb detection robot was deployed around the red Ford Explorer that was parked on the west side of Green Street just south of Main Street. The robot made several passes around the vehicle and under it before a member of bomb squad suited up in protective gear and moved in to take a closer look at the vehicle. The officer was flanked by two other officers carrying rifles.

After the vehicle doors were opened and the interior inspected, the bomb squad member signaled that no bomb was located.

Piers said that the scene was deemed safe and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation is active and ongoing. The Crawfordsville Police Department will continue to investigate.

Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Crawfordsville Fire/EMS.

No other information was made available.
