Honoring Private Jacob W. Boots

Company A. 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry

On Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. at Peterson Cemetery near Kirkpatrick, Montgomery County, the Indiana the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Co. D, Sons of Veterans Reserve Co. D. 11th Indiana Volunteer Zouaves along with Dorothy Q Chapter, NSDAR participated in a Tribute to Private Jacob W. Boots born April 17, 1847. Jacob enlisted in Company G, 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, that his elder brother Samuel enlisted in 1861 under the Command of General Lew Wallace. Shortly after joining the regiment in early 1865, Jacob arrived in Baltimore to begin training, but contacted meningitis passing just 12 days short of his 19th birthday on April 5, 1865. Jacobs family was notified of his death, and his brother Samuel immediately made the journey to Washington, DC to retrieve his body. After arriving Samuel was delayed for two weeks because on April 15, 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated. This shut down all rail travel to and from the capital. By early May, Samuel brought back his brother to this spot for a quiet family burial ...  Remembering Jacob’s short life, but an honorable legacy as a soldier of the Republic and a good son. We also remember two other Civil War veterans this day with placement of new headstones in Peterson Cemetery: William Wolfe and William L. Price.
