CROSS COUNTRY

CHS tunes up for county meets

Both the Crawfordsville girls’ and boys’ cross country teams found success Saturday at the Cascade Jon Mitchell Invitational. The boys’ team placed first out of nine teams and the girls’ team finished second.

Athenian Hutton Haas was the top Crawfordsville runner. He completed the course in fourth place with a time of 17:31. Teammate Josh Inskeep recorded a time of 17:34 which placed him sixth.

Other Athenian times and places were Jantzen Thayer 11th in 17:59 and Max Brumett 16th in 18:41. Colton Custer placed 20th with a time of 19:07 and Alex Sanchez was 21st running the course in 19:09.

“Saturday was the best team effort we have had all season,” Athenian coach Jared McMurry said. “I am proud of our boys’ team for using each other to achieve one of our season goals in winning an invitational.”

The girls’ team had three runners finish in the top 20.

Katherine Novak finished second with a time of 21:17. Remy Swinford’s time of 23:39 placed her in 13th. Caroline Novak finished in 17th place in 24:22. Finishing 21st was Melanie Dowd in 24:52 and Li Li Yeung ran the course in 28:06 to finish in 34th place.

“We had three girls place in the top 20,” McMurry said. “We are now ready to compete for county titles on Wednesday.” 

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mounties defeat Clovers

Southmont played host to Cloverdale on Monday and defeated the Clovers in three sets.

Match scores were 25-7, 25-13, 25-9.

Ella Barry recorded 16 kills, two blocks and five digs to lead the Mounties.

Other Mountie leaders were Catie Himes with five aces and Jenna Grino with nine digs.

Southmont traveled Tuesday to Lebanon. They will host Attica on Thursday.

 

Knights topple Athenians

Crawfordsville lost Monday at Lafayette Central Catholic.

The game went four sets. Other than the first set the games were close and competitive.

Scores were 12-25, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25.

Crawfordsville’s Reese Price had 20 kills and Katy Grace Whitecotton recorded five blocks. Emma Buser had 14 digs.

The Athenians played North Putnam on Tuesday and will face county rival North Montgomery in the Charger Gym on Thursday.

 

GOLF

North splits match

North Montgomery defeated Fountain Central but lost to Tri-West on Monday at Rocky Ridge Golf Club.

Chargers Mallory Inskeep and Marlee Reed each shot 49’s. Kayla Sankey and Krestyn Bradford each recorded a 59 for a team total of 216.

“Tonight was a mixed bag for us,” Charger coach Bob Ryker said. “We came up short of Tri-West, but I am proud how we bounced back to secure a victory over Fountain Central.”

Ryker said his team will use the match to gear up for today’s county match at Rocky Ridge.

“Hosting the county meet on Wednesday is a big opportunity for us,” Ryker said. “It is a chance to build on lessons from tonight and compete at a higher level. We look forward to defending our home turf and giving it our all.”

 

SOCCER

Trojans defeat Stars

The Covington girls’ soccer team defeated Western Boone 3-0 on Monday.

Trojan Preslee Shaw started the scoring in the first minute of the contest and the score of 1-0 held until the second half.

Covington’s Bre Batley and Allie Hunt scored goals in the second half. Ryane Beck recorded the shutout in her first-ever game as goalie.

Covington travels to Twin Lakes on Thursday.

 

TENNIS

Fountain Central wins again

Fountain Central won a Wabash River Conference tennis match Monday against Seeger. The Mustangs won 3-2. All five matches were won in two sets.

Seeger’s No. 1 singles player Zach Reynolds defeated Gabe McCullum 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles Mustang Skyler Hoagland won 6-0, 6-0 over Jack Odle. Fountain Central’s Ayden Batchelor defeated Cayden Grimmett 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match.

FC’s No. 1 doubles team of Levi McTagertt and Levi Miller lost 3-6, 3-6 to Macyn Hughes and Garrett Cooksey.

FC’s No. 2 doubles team of William Armstrong and Jose Duarte-Gajales won 6-1, 6-3 over Jacob Potter and Hayden Howard.

The Mustangs played Parke Heritage Tuesday and host Attica on Thursday.

 

FOOTBALL

Ruppert honored by NCAC

Wabash College junior linebacker Gavin Ruppert earned North Coast Athletic Conference Football Defensive Athlete of the Week honors for his performance in Saturday’s 30-13 victory by the Little Giants over Ohio Wesleyan University.

Ruppert matched his career-best mark for tackles with 18 stops in Saturday’s win. The junior linebacker recorded 12 tackles with six assisted tackles to match his career-best mark of 18. Ruppert also made two sacks for losses of 27 yards and had five tackles for losses totaling 29 yards. He also intercepted a pass for the Little Giants that set up a third-quarter Wabash touchdown to give the Little Giants a 20-6 lead.
