South finishes second in final SAC golf match

Posted

Saturday marked the first of many lasts for all three county schools as they leave the Sagamore Athletic Conference with the girls’ golf conference championship match. Southmont finished the day six strokes behind champion, Western Boone. The North Montgomery Chargers finished in fifth. Crawfordsville Athenians did not have a complete team.

It was also another last for Southmont Senior Addison Meadows. She stepped off the 18th green at the Crawfordsville Country Club for the last time in her Mountie uniform as the conference medalist shooting a one-under par 70.

“This is a tough loss for us,” said Southmont Coach Bill Whalen. “I told the girls any of us could have made up at least two strokes and this last Sagamore Conference Championship could have been ours. The front nine just did not go our way.”

Southmont finished with a 378, and Meadows making first team all-conference. The rest of the Mounties (Kelsey Thompson, Addison Kendricks, Kate Myers and Maggie Gilliland) all made second team.

“Now our attention turns to county on Wednesday and sectional on Saturday,” Whalen said. “North always plays well on their home course, so we can’t take anything for granted. I also hope to see us in the hunt for the sectional championship.”

The fifth-place finish for the Chargers isn’t where Coach Bob Ryker wanted to see his team finish, but he did see some positives from the match. The team finished with a 444.

“We did improve our scores from the Southmont Invite on this course from earlier this season,” Ryker said. “We have a lot to work on for county and sectional this coming week.”

Two Chargers made the all-conference teams. Mallory Inskeep is representing the Chargers as a first team all-conference selection, and freshman Marlee Reed made second team.

“I’m so happy for those two to make the conference teams,” Ryker said. “Both ladies have put in a lot of work to get where they are.”

All three teams will be back in action on Wednesday at Rocky Ridge Golf Club for the county championship match. Saturday will have all three teams hitting the links at Harrison Hills for sectional.
