CHS downs Chargers to claim county title

Posted

Crawfordsville got the best of North Montgomery, their county and Sagamore Conference rival, by winning 5-0 at home Monday. The win also earned Crawfordsville the title of county champions.

The Athenians dominated all five matches. The closest battle was at the No. 2 doubles match when Crawfordsville’s Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt defeated Chargers Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller 6-3, 6-3.

Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said his team came out and took care of business against the Chargers.

“I was proud of the guys for doing what they had to do and to keep ourselves in a good position in the Sagamore Conference,” Brainard said. “We are coming down to the homestretch and I want to focus less on the winning and losing but on players continuing to improve. The fact they are willing to improve and being at a level of wanting to get better is what I am more excited about.”

Charger Coach Devan Plant was pleased with his young team’s effort and thought the matches were better than last season.

“Crawfordsville is an experienced team and has done well all year,” Plant said. “It is fun playing against their high caliber players and they make us get better. We get better by playing good teams like Crawfordsville.”

Other scores were Crawfordsville’s No. 1 singles player, Rowan Grambrel over Becket Martin 6-0, 6-1 and Athenian No. 2 single player, Wyatt Motz, beat Cade Cole 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 Crawfordsville singles player Jude Coursey defeated Dane Elliott 6-2, 6-1.

To compete the sweep Crawfordsville’s No. 1 doubles of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon defeated Carter Thompson and Austin Biddle 6-2, 6-0.

With the victory, Crawfordsville picked up two Chase points.

The Chargers (6-6, 2-2 SAC) have a busy week. They played Frankfort on Tuesday and will play Lafayette Central Catholic on Wednesday and Seeger on Thursday.

Crawfordsville (9-2, 4-0 SAC) had a road match at Danville on Tuesday and will travel to Tri-West on Thursday for two Sagamore Athletic Conference matches that will go a long way in determining the SAC championship.
