Athenians upend Lebanon

Crawfordsville traveled to Lebanon on Tuesday and defeated the Tigers 3-2 in a big Sagamore Athletic Conference match. The Athenians won the match when all three singles players beat their Tiger opponents.

Athenian No. 1 singles Rowan Gambrel won 6-1, 6-4 over Owen Bigler. Crawfordsville’s Wyatt Motz defeated Wesley Byrd 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles seat. Athenian No. 3 singles player Jude Coursey defeated Thomas Devlin 6-0, 6-0.

Both doubles matches went three sets but Lebanon prevailed each match.

No. 1 doubles Lebanon doubles of Jack Ferrell and Ian Kincade defeated Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon 6-3, 2-6, 4-6. At the No. 2 doubles match Tigers Owen Kincade and Parker Lawson beat Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt.

“I am really proud of the way our team played,” Athenian Coach Craig Brainard said. “I encouraged the players to approach this match just like every match, despite it being a tough conference opponent. They guys went out and got the job done.”

“We are looking forward to seeing (Lebanon) again in the sectional,” Brainard added.

Crawfordsville is at Tri-West today for another SAC matchup.

 

Chargers beat Trojans

North Montgomery defeated visiting Covington 4-1 on Tuesday. The win evens the Chargers’ record to 5-5.

North singles player No. 2 Cade Cole got back on the winning track with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Carson Schaeffer. Dane Elliott won 6-3, 6-4 over Covington’s Luke Holycross at No. 2 singles.

Charger coach Devon Plant started a different No. 2 doubles team and the move paid off. Nolyn Brown and Aiden Ambriz defeated Ben Stewart and Grissom Cope 6-4, 7-5.

“Nolyn Brown and Aiden Ambriz were able to get their first career varsity wins,” Plant said. “I gave them an
opportunity to step in and play and they rose to the occasion.”

The Chargers No. 1 doubles team of Carter Thompson and Austin Biddle beat Michael Norton and Brody Goodrich 6-1, 6-3.

The lone Charger loss came at No. 1 singles when Trojan Urban Roards defeated Beckett Martin 6-0, 6-0.

The Chargers travel today to Greencastle.

 

Frankfort beats Athenians

Southmont’s boys’ tennis team lost 2-3 at Frankfort on Tuesday.

Mountie Colton Cory came back after losing the first set. Scores were 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The other Southmont win was from the No. 2 doubles team of Eden Hernandez and Chazz Long who beat Zach Kurth and Landon Stewart 6-1, 6-2.

Southmont’s No. 1 singles player Gavin Downey lost 6-7, 3-6 to Jackson Ray. Mountie No. 2 singles player Caden Allen was defeated 3-6, 3-6 by Kelby Santos.

Southmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Owen McCutchan and Dean McGaughey were beaten by Frankfort’s Isai Jiminey and Charley Beardsly 1-6, 2-6.

Southmont (2-8) plays at home today against South Putnam before traveling to Tri-West on Saturday.

 

SOCCER

Athenians beat Warriors

The Crawfordsville girls’ soccer team won a big Sagamore Athletic Conference match against Danville 2-1 on Tuesday.

Athenian goals came from by Carolyn Novak and Zari Freeze. Crawfordsville’s Riley Cardner and Ally Johnson garnered an assist apiece.

“Going into the game the girls knew it was going to be a tough one,” Crawfordsville Coach Alex Ehrlich said. “The girls responded with intensity and grit to pull off the win.”

The Athenians have now won four matches in a row and improved their record to 4-3 including 3-0 in the SAC. The team will play at Bethesda Christian in Brownsburg on Thursday.

 

Mounties beat Hot Dogs

The Southmont girls’ soccer team beat Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Frankfort 10-4.

Mountie Molly Williams scored four goals to lead her team. Other Southmont goals were recorded by Claire Kessler and Jessica Hale, each with two goals. Scoring one goal each was Keaira Sanchez and Kaelynn Sanburn.

Recording assists for Southmont were Jada Graves, Emily Link, Madison Bensen, Molly Williams and Camryn Priebe.

Southmont is now 4-3 and 3-1 in the SAC.

The Mounties host Greencastle today.

 

VOLLEYBALL

CHS earns victory over Falcons

Crawfordsville hosted the North Vermillion Falcons on Tuesday and was victorious in four sets.

Game scores were 25-18, 20-25, 17-25, 25-19.

Athenians Reece Price had 18 kills and Makayla Whitecotton had two blocks. Lilly Hummel added seven aces for Crawfordsville.

Crawfordsville (8-4) travels today to West Lafayette.

 

Mounties fall to Tri-West

Southmont (4-9) lost a Sagamore Athletic Conference battle at Tri-West in three sets.

Scores were 8-25, 8-25, 10-25.
