TENNIS

Athenians win at Parke Heritage

Crawfordsville was victorious Monday at Parke Heritage, winning 3-2. The match was a lot closer than the final score indicates since three of the five matches needed third sets to determine the winner.

Athenian No. 1 singles player Rowan Gambrel found himself behind when he lost the first set to Lewi Woody 4-6. Gambrel fought back to win the second set 6-3 before losing in a tight battle 5-7.

A close battle between the teams’ No. 2 doubles went down to the wire. Heritage Parke’s Warren Ayres defeated Athenians Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.

Crawfordsville’s No 3 singles player Jude Coursey also had a tight battle before winning in three sets. The scores were 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and clinched the team win for the Athenians.

At No. 2 singles Wyatt Motz won 6-0, 6-4 and the No. 1 doubles team of Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon defeated Parker Hopkins and Joel Miller 6-2, 6-1.

“It was a tight one against the Wolves, but I was proud of the way our team composed themselves and battled in tough situations,” Athenian coach Craig Brainard said. “I was especially proud of the grit our team displayed considering last week we had seven matches in five days, and we got started off this week with such a test of physical and mental endurance. For us to come out on top is a big boost going into another big week.”

Crawfordsville played at Lebanon on Tuesday and will travel to Western Boone on Thursday.
