Athenian tennis dominates Mounties

NEW MARKET — The Crawfordsville Athenian tennis team made quick work of the Southmont Mounties on Thursday at the Mountie Courts ,winning 5-0 to take county and conference wins.

Senior Wyatt Motz put the Athenians on the board quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mountie Senior Caden Allen at No. 2 singles. Rowan Gambrel beat Gavin Downey at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Jude Coursey ousted Colton Cory at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, Jude Hutchison and Henry Bannon beat the Mountie duo of Owen McCutchan and Dean McGaughey, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Nolan Watt and Ian Hurt topped Eden Hernandez and Chazz Long, 6-3, 6-1.

Athenian Coach Craig Brainard was pleased with what he saw out of his team.

“I’m always proud of the way our guys handle themselves as young men,” Brainard said. “You never know how things will go against a county rival, but we played our game tonight.”

Southmont Coach Nathan Poynter said the match went as expected.“

“Crawfordsville is by far the best team in our conference,” he said.
