Mounties aim to get back on winning track in 2023

Last year was an off-year for Southmont girls golf as a team. Collectively the Mounties failed to make it out of the sectional as they placed fourth. Now in 2023 the Mounties will look to get back to their normal winning ways and since the year got going in late June, South has been on a steady pace of tournaments including a fifth place finish at the Terre Haute South Invite just last Saturday. This upcoming Saturday the Mounties will host their annual Southmont Invite at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

Junior Addison Meadows will aim to get back to her third straight IHSAA State Finals this year and Meadows is already off to a great start. At the Tipton Invite back on Aug. 2 Meadows fired a personal best 67 on her way to earning medalist. She’s earned the medalist at every meet so far this season. Along with Meadows the Mounties bring back Kelsey Thompson and Parker Church from last year’s team. Hanna Long has also joined the Mounties for this season and freshman Addison Kendricks has made a strong impression early on.

“The goal is obviously for all of these girls are getting better as the season goes on,” Southmont coach Bill Whalen said. “They’ve been working hard at it and they know that they can’t let Addison (Meadows) do it all.  We’ve had a good freshman class that’s come in and been able to give us some depth. We only lost one senior (Stella Snook) from a year ago so I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and am pretty excited about it.”

Meadows and the rest of the Mounties will look for some big meet success the rest of the season. Down the road South will have the Sagamore Conference meet at the Country Club on Sept. 9 and look to defend their county title on Sept. 13 at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course.
