Volleyball sectionals set to begin

The IHSAA volleyball state tournament kicks off Thursday. County schools will be playing at three different sites and Fountain Central will play in the Covington Sectional.

 

3A Sectional #25 at Brebuef Preparatory

Crawfordsville will play Guerin Catholic at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brebuef in Indianapolis.

Crawfordsville, the Montgomery County Champions, enters the tournament with a 16-12 record. Guerin Catholic’s record is 13-17.

The Athenians strength has been their net play and they need to continue that trend to get by Guerin.

Crawfordsville’s 6-0 sophomore Reese Price has 318 kills this season and 5-9 senior Katy Grace Whitecotton has 26 blocks to lead the team. Guerin will attempt to match the Athenians with 6-0 junior Maddie Fritch, who has 225 kills, and 6-1 sophomore Julia Easters who has accumulated 53 blocks.

The winner will play the winner of Frankfort and Brebeuf at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

 

2A Sectional #37 at Western Boone

North Montgomery will play Delphi at 6 p.m. Thursday to open the Western Boone Sectional.

The Chargers enter the tournament with a 9-19 record. The Oracles are 3-27. The two teams met Sept. 21 and North Montgomery won 2-0.

North Montgomery is led by senior Piper Ramey, who leads the team in serving aces, digs and assists. Senior Kaydence Young leads the Chargers with 224 kills and Caelyn Carpenter has 28 blocks.

Delphi senior Maddy Brown leads her team in kills with 84 and 39 blocks.

The winner of the match will advance to play Western Boone at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

 

2A Sectional #41 at Southmont

Southmont will battle South Putnam at home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Mounties enter tournament play with a 16-12 record and winners of eight of their last nine games. South Putnam’s record is 11-14. The Mounties swept the Eagles 3-0 on Oct. 2.

Each team has a freshman who is instrumental on their team. Southmont’s Ella Barry and South Putnam’s Elliana Cox are formidable around the net. Cox has 197 kills, 37 aces and leads her team with 199 digs.

Barry has 286 kills and 25 blocks. Barry has also served 53 aces.

Other key Mounties are senior Catie Himes and senior Jenna Grino.

The winner of the match will play North Putnam 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship match is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday.

 

Sectional #53 at Covington

The Mustangs will play North Vermillion 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Covington. Fountain Central enters the sectional with an 8-19 record. The Falcons stand at 5-13.

Fountain Central defeated North Vermillion 3-1 on Oct. 2.

The Falcons are led by senior Addie Burns who leads the team with 184 kills, 27 blocks and 229 digs.

The Mustangs’ sophomore Aubrey Ashwill leads her team with 135 kills and 15 blocks. Senior Rylee Simko tops Fountain Central with 38 aces and 436 digs.

The winner of the match will advance to play the winner of Covington and Riverton Parke at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday.
