Athenians fall to Parke Heritage

Crawfordsville lost to Parke Heritage in the opening round of the Lebanon regional on Tuesday.

Athenian No. 2 singles player Wyatt Motz was the only winner for Crawfordsville. The first time the two teams met the Athenians won 3-2. On Tuesday, the match was close again with No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams going to three sets.

Coach Craig Brainard thought the atmosphere around the court was different than any match they had played all season.

“We went into the match like any other match, which may have hurt us because it clearly was a different atmosphere once the matches got going,” he said.

Brainard said the other match between large schools Carmel and Brebuef Jesuit had a loud and boisterous crowd that his team was not ready for.

“I believe the intensity of the Carmel and Brebuef match affected our first sets quite a bit,” Brainard said. “Parke Heritage handled it well and got off to a great start. We were playing catch up after losing the first set besides in the No. 2 singles match.

“We had a chance to win both doubles match ups, but Parke Heritage demonstrated a lot of resilience and determination to take the victory.”

Crawfordsville won their own sectional last week and the final Sagamore Athletic Conference championship this season.

Brainard complimented the three seniors on his team.

“Our seniors this year, Jude Coursey, Jude Hutchison and Wyatt Motz, will be a hard group to replace,” Brainard said. “They are hard working and a great influence for the guys coming up. I am proud of the strides they made this year in tennis and in their leadership which I know they will take with them after they graduate.”

Parke Heritage will play Brebuef Jesuit, who defeated Carmel 3-2, at 5 p.m. Saturday.
