Commissioners table plans to raze Alamo gym

Posted

Montgomery County Commissioners were expecting to apply for a grant to pay for the razing of the Alamo Gym, however a glitch has been discovered. There is now a dispute on who actually owns the gym, so counthy officials have decided to delay their application for a grant to help cover the cost of demolition.

County attorney Dan Taylor told commissioners the dispute will likely be resolved in court since both of the parties have acquired attorneys.

Online real estate records list the owner as Jerry Bryer. There is no recent deed transfer of ownership on record.

The name of the person claiming to be the rightful owner was not disclosed at the meeting.

The delay will cause the county to miss the deadline to file the application for the grant.

Commissioners were disappointed to hear the news.

“This has been a total waste of our time,” Commissioner Dan Guard said. “This is ridiculous.”

Commissioners approved a resolution allowing the county Redevelopment Commission to issue bonds for the design and construction of water main extension along Nucor Road. The bond is not to exceed $7,775,000 with a term no longer than 20 years. The maximum interest rate on the bond is 7.5%.

The project will benefit the Nucor Road Economic Development Area.

The accumulated bridge fund was reduced by commissioners from $0.075 per $100 to $0.055 per $100.

Two speed limit ordinances received a first reading — C.R. 400N between U.S. 231 North and C.R. 400W will be changed to 40 m.p.h. and the speed limit on C.R. 150S between State Road 47S and C.R. 200W will be changed to 45 m.p.h. Both new speed limits became effective immediately.

In other business, commissioners:

• Agreed to upgrade the county’s panic button system in county offices.

• Approved the renewal of a lease at 127 E. Main St. which is the public defenders’ office.

• Renewed the county employee health insurance including a move for stop loss carrier to Symetra.
