Athenians place third at Early Bird Tourney

Crawfordsville’s volleyball team ended Saturday’s Early Bird Tournament at North Putnam in third place. The Athenians went 3-1 on the day.

In the opener, Mooresville defeated Crawfordsville 2-0.

The Athenians then won their next three games by 2-0 scores over Seeger, Southmont and North Montgomery.

Crawfordsville is now 5-1 before playing Riverton Parke at home today.

 

Southmont goes 1-2 at Early Bird

Southmont’s volleyball team lost to Crawfordsville and Mooresville on Saturday at the North Putnam Early Bird Tournament.

The Mounties defeated Seeger 2-0 to go 1-2 on the day.

Southmont (2-3) returned to North Putnam on Monday for their regular season scheduled game.

North competes at Early Bird

North Montgomery went 2-2 in the North Putnam Early Bird Tournament.

The Chargers defeated North Putnam 2-1 and Attica 2-0 before losing to Cascade and Crawfordsville by 1-2 and 0-2 scores, respectively.

Charger coach Taylor Pierce saw improvement in her team’s play.

“We worked this weekend on rotations and we were able to put some complete games together,” Pierce said. “Freshman Sophie Welshimer stepped up and played all day. Her defense made a big difference in our play.

The Chargers (2-4) traveled Monday to Traders Point Christian.

 

FC drop matches at Eagle Invite

The Fountain Central volleyball team fell 0-2 to Sheridan in the Eagle Invite on Saturday. The Mustangs struggled to find a rhythm in their play, but had strong serving from junior Laney Hoagland. The Mustangs fell 26-24 in the first set and 25-17 in the second set.

The Mustangs ended the invitational playing host school, Faith Christian. The Mustangs improved throughout the match making several adjustments in game that allowed them to have competitive moments.

While the Mustangs fell 0-2 at the Eagle Invite, their record went to an even 3-3. They improved their skill and look forward to their first WRC match today against Seeger in the Williamsport gym.

 

GOLF

Mounties place fourth

The Southmont girls’ golf team shot a team score of 396 placing fourth out of a field of nine teams on Saturday.

The Mounties were led by medalist Addison Meadows round of two over par 73. Maggie Gilliland shot 105, Kelsey Thompson 106 and Addison Kendricks 112.

The Mounties were scheduled to play Monday at Cool Lake against Western Boone.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

Chargers defeat S. Vermillion

North Montgomery girls’ soccer defeated South Vermillion 9-0 on Saturday on the road.

Charger Genesis Reyes scored three goals and Taylor Hudson recorded two goals. Other Chargers who scored were Riley Robinson, Courtney Bennett, Alexis Bennett and Mady Holt.

Charger coach Julie Hodges was pleased with her squad’s performance.

“We did a great job maintaining possession and controlling the 50/50 battle,” Hodges said. “We were able to connect passes and finish our shots. Our pressure and shifting on the back line was much better allowing us to limit their scoring chances.”

The Chargers are 1-1.

The Saturday boys’ game versus South Vermillion was canceled do to South Vermillion not having a complete team.

 

Mounties fall to Monrovia

Southmont girl’s soccer team lost to a tough Monrovia team 10-1 on Saturday.

The Mounties were short handed since three starters were absent. With only three substitutes available, the team  struggled in the heat of the day.

Keeper Makenzie Wood was injured in the first half and was replaced by Kit Jennings.

“Kit has never played goalie before and she stepped up in the second half,” Mountie coach Angie Williams said. “She did a great job and we have found a new backup goalie.”

The Mounties are 1-2 and will be home today against Sagamore Conference foe Lebanon.
