David R. Allen of Crawfordsville passed away Tuesday evening, Aug. 6, 2024, at Franciscan Health Lafayette East. He was 69.

Born Sept. 30, 1954, at Danville, Illinois, he was the oldest of five children born to Gordon Allen and Marjorie Coleman Allen. He was a graduate of Covington High School and then attended the Missouri Auctioneers School to become a licensed auctioneer. He married Amy Lynn Crowder on Dec. 23, 1977, at Hillsboro, and they have celebrated 46 years together.

Dave began his working career driving a school bus for Covington Community Schools and he, along with Amy, were the caretakers of the Covington City Park. Later, he worked at Agri-Vest and then RR Donnelley & Sons where he was a hoist driver in both the north and south plants and retired after 22 years.

In his retirement, Dave and Amy opened Allen’s Country Kitchen in downtown Crawfordsville where together they had the privilege of meeting and serving so many community members. Most recently they ran the cafeteria and catered on the campus of Nucor Steel.

Dave loved keeping up with his granddaughter’s activities and being involved in anything she decided to do. He loved to feed the birds and watch them through the window for hours on end, took pride in his flower beds, and spending time with his family.

Surviving family includes: wife Amy Lynn Allen; daughter Erin Hreskowsky; son-in-law Vladimyr Hreskowsky; granddaughter Shaeleigh Hreskowsky; brother Eddie Joe Allen (Stephanie); two sisters, Nancy Call (Bob) and Becky Robinson (John); sister-in-law Nancy Allen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Steve Allen.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at Burkhart Funeral Home as well as one hour prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. After the service, he will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro.
