Southmont volleyball falls to Covington

NEW MARKET — Coming off a rough road loss to Greencastle on Tuesday, the Southmont volleyball team bounced back to give the undefeated Covington Trojans all they wanted in four sets, but fell short to fall to 3-5 this season.

It was 25-21, 19-25, 25-11, and 25-18.

Even with the loss, Coach Erin Barry is pleased with what she saw.

“We played well tonight even with the loss,” Barry said. “I loved our intensity, the hard work, and the teamwork we showed tonight. Covington is a good team, and they have been good for a few years. I’m pleased we were able to take a set from them.”

After losing the first set 25-21, which saw a couple of lead changes, the Mounties came out in set two, missed their first serve, and then took the lead at 3-2 and never looked back. The tides turned in favor of the Trojans, winning easily in the third. The Mounties didn’t go down without a fight in the fourth and final set.

“I feel like we had good coverage and defense tonight, and our offense was working the way we want to see it,” Barry said. “However, our serving errors really hurt us tonight. We will definitely be working on our serves the next few days.”

Mallory Mason led the Mounties with 27 assists. Catie Himes and Ella Barry led South with nine kills each, and Layla Gomez had five kills. On the defensive side, Jenna Grino led the Mounties with 15 digs, Himes and Barry each had 13 digs, Mason 11 digs and Kendall Priebe seven.

Barry also was pleased with the play of freshman Kaylee Turner.

“Kaylee had some keys play for us tonight in the front row,” Barry said. “She had five digs all in the front row. She kept us in a couple matches with her play.”

Next up for the Mounties is county and conference foe, North Montgomery, on Tuesday at home.
