James “Jim” Richard Bounnell, 96, passed away Aug. 27, 2024, at The Barrington of Carmel.

Jim was born Feb. 2, 1928, at Crawfordsville, to the late J. Heath and Bernice (Starnes) Bounnell. Jim was married to Nancy Jo Lowe on Oct. 11, 1953, until her passing in 2018.

Jim graduated from Waynetown High School, Class of 1946. He attended Indiana University for two years, where he was an active member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and graduated from Butler University College of Pharmacy, Class of 1951.

He began his career as a pharmacist working with Hook’s Drug Stores in Indianapolis. Jim then returned to Waynetown to work with his father at Bounnell Pharmacy; between the two, they operated the family business successfully for 50 years, from 1926 to 1976. In early 1976, Jim joined the staff as a pharmacist at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis, retiring in December of 1990 after over 40 years in the industry. 

Jim was a past member of the Crawfordsville Elks, Sertoma Club in East Indianapolis, Waynetown Christian Church and St. Luke United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

Jim and Nancy enjoyed playing cards, particularly Bridge, hosting card parties with friends and family. Jim was an avid Cubs, Colts, IU basketball fan. He completed daily crossword puzzles, which contributed to his excellent memory. Jim will be remembered as a determined, resilient man who loved his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nancy; brother Harry Bounnell; and son-in-law Michael Springer.

Survivors include: his children, Ross Bounnell of Somerset, Kentucky, Scott Bounnell (Berdenea) of Green Valley, Arizona, and Mary Springer of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Christopher, Candace and Stephanie Springer, Katie Wise and Jasmine Blick; and great-grandchildren, Jaylen and London Springer.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, where Jim will be laid to rest next to Nancy.
