CLAYTON — North Montgomery was defeated by Cascade 42-22 in a game that was suspended Friday due to inclement weather and concluded Saturday.

The Cadets were able to build a 21-0 lead when the game was suspended at 6:35 remaining in the first half on Friday. It took North Montgomery (0-2) just 24 seconds after the game resumed Saturday to get on the board when junior quarterback Jack Warren found paydirt from one yard out. The two-point conversion was successful when Warren found Mikeal Kincaid open in the endzone making the score 21-8. The Chargers would get no closer. Cascade (2-0) answered with two scores before Warren found senior Kelby Harwood on a 17-yard pass with 6:03 remaining in the third quarter but Cascade led 42-14.

The Chargers’ senior running back Jayden Thompson was able to score from one yard out with 6:12 remaining in the game.

Cadet sophomore Lucas Farmer rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries. Cascade’s offense rolled with 575 total yards including 467 rushing yards.

The Chargers were led by Kelby Harwood who caught four passes for 53 yards and one score. Jayden Thompson led the rushing attack with 45 yards.

North Montgomery Coach Josh Thompson said his team was better in their second game than they were in their first game.

“We improved from Week 1, but we need to keep working,” Thompson said.

After two games the  Achilles heel for the Chargers has been tackling. The North Montgomery defense gave up 349 rushing yards against Cascade. In the two Charger losses, opponent have gained 804 yards on 79 rushing attempts.

Thompson knows tackling has to get better especially with run-oriented Southmont being the next opponent.

“Our tackling needs to improve if we are going to have any success,” Thompson said. “We got better from Friday to Saturday and we had a strong finish.”

The Chargers will travel to Southmont (1-1) for a Sagamore Athletic Conference and County Chase game. Cascade will play at Edgewood on Friday.
