Alamo gymnasium closer to demolition

Posted

Montgomery County Commissioners took the next steps that will eventually lead to the demolition of the Alamo gymnasium. Using an agreement with Thrive West Central, commissioners will apply for grant funding to aid in the demolition of the structure which is deemed to have a high potential of collapsing.

The grant application by Thrive will sent to the Office of Community Rural Affairs. If the application is approved, the county will need to apply again for the actual funding in 2025. If all goes well, commissioners believe demolition will be sometime in the second half of 2025.

As a part of the grant application, commissioners declared the Alamo gym as a blighted property through a resolution. The resolution states about the gym as posing a threat of human safety and is on the brink of collapse, with its roof already caved in.

Commissioners introduced an ordinance establishing a stop sign at the intersection of Ladoga Road and Purple Heart Parkway.

Commissioners approved account payables in the amount of $1,769,604 and payroll in the amount of $469,238.

The next commissioners meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Montgomery County Government Center.
