Kart drivers tune up for state race

Posted

They still are lightning quick around one of the best race tracks in the country just outside of Crawfordsville.

Ben Hur Speedway continues to host kart racing as it has full-time since 1982. Nearly 100 karts were in the pits Aug. 3 and the night was topped off by a Clone Heavy class special.

“We had 18 or 19 karts just for that class,” long-time racer and Ben Hur club member Juan Grino said. “We had some top drivers and the feature race pretty much went green to checker. It was a good race.”

The third-mile dirt track continues to hold regular and special events with the annual premiere event right around the corner.

“This is one of the premiere kart tracks around,” Grino said. “We’re gearing up for the 40th Indiana State Dirt Championship, which is Sept. 7. We had that race for years on Labor Day Weekend, just switched weekends a couple years ago and changed from two to one day. I think it’s made a big difference.”

Before the state race, drivers will tune up with regular points Saturday. The night will be topped off by a 100-lap Predator class feature. Gates open at 3 p.m. with practice at 5:30 p.m.

General admission is $5 with ages 4 and younger admitted for free.
