Southmont beats Hot Dogs

FRANKFORT — Southmont ended their two-game losing streak with a convincing victory over the home-standing Frankfort Hotdogs 40-0.

After a scoreless first quarter the Mountie offense started to roll in the win over the Sagamore Conference and future Monon Athletic Conference rival.

After kicking off to Frankfort to begin the game, Southmont gave up a couple of first downs until the defense stiffened up. The Hotdogs moved the ball to the Southmont 14-yard line at the 6:00 mark. However four straight tackles for a loss shut down Frankfort who surrended the ball on downs.

The first quarter ended with neither team scoring, but Southmont’s offense started clicking.

Mountie Cale Chadd carried the ball for 23 yards to set up the Mounties on the 3-yard line. One play later running back Avery Stadler got into the endzone with 7:21 left in the second period. After Stadler rushed the ball for the two-point conversion, Southmont led 8-0 and never looked back.

After Frankfort turned the ball back to Mounties for a second time, it was Cale Chad again who ran the ball 53-yard run before being stopped on the Frankfort 1-yard line. Again, Stadler hit paydirt from one-yard out. After a failed conversion attempt the Mounties led 14-0.

After the Hotdogs punted to Southmont, Chadd once again broke free for a 20-yard touchdown. South’s Nick Larue hit the extra point kick and the Mounties led 21-0 at the break.

Mountie Coach Desson Hannum was pleased for the success of the team’s offense and gameplan.

“It was nice to get a win after the last two weeks,” Hannum said. “We were able to get our passing game going after we had established the run. It was nice to do the things we wanted to do with some success.”

After intermission it did not take Southmont long to get on the board again. This time it was a 61-yard scoring strike from quaterback Heath Toliver. After another successful extra-point try by Larue, the Mounties led 28-0.

The Mounties struck again when Tolliver pinpointed a pass to Gunnar Shirk in the back of the endzone for another score making the score 34-0.

With just over 8 minutes left in the game, Mountie Logan Hardin ran for a 50-yard touchdown for the final score of the game.

Hannum complimented the Southmont defense after the game which bent but did not break.

“We did not shoot ourselves in the foot this week and our defense played very well,” Hannum said. “This will help us as we get ready for a tough game next week.”

The Mounties will be on the road Friday when they travel to county-rival Crawfordsville. The game is a Sagamore Conference and county Chase points contest.
