Local families sought to help vets

The local Veterans Service Office recorded a total of 70 phone calls this past month and had a total of 14 veterans visit the office for appointments. A total of  12 veterans were transported to their appointments at their clinics.

Montgomery County Veterans Service Officer Joe Ellis will be at the American Legion Post 72 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 and at the VFW Post 1431 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22. Call him at 765-361-4133 to make an appointment.

One or two local families are being sought to help veterans who do not want to go into a nursing home but want to stay in a residential setting. Participants must have at least a three-bedroom home. The VA will assign a veteran to the home. It also will provide the veteran with care at your home. Participants who open their homes to a veteran are paid. To learn more, call Ellis at 765-361-4133.

The Military Family Relief Fund now has assistance for veterans and their families that are experiencing financial hardship. This special program can assist with essential school expenses for dependent children that reside in their homes. The assistance amount would be $500 for each child residing in the veteran’s home. The program continues through Aug. 30. The veteran must have an honorable, under honorable conditions, or certain other than honorable discharges. An eligible dependent child shall be under 18 years of age or is 18-23 years of age, but still enrolled in high school or high school equivalency. Contact Ellis to complete the necesarry forms.
