John F. Vansickle, 78 of Waynetown passed away at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, in Franciscan Health Lafayette East, following a period of failing health.

John was born Jan. 14, 1942, at Indianapolis, to Marvin “Bud” and Dessie “Dee” Truax Vansickle. He married Beverly A. Riley on Aug. 25, 1962, at Lebanon. She survives.

John was a 1961 graduate of Thorntown High School and went to work as an insulator. He spent his career as a Union Insulator with Union Local 18. He and Beverly were 56-year residents of Waynetown. Over the years John enjoyed farm equipment and classic cars and was especially proud of his ’59 Oldsmobile 98 convertible and his Chrysler 300.

John enjoyed playing Euchre, was a member of the Crawfordsville Moose Lodge, and had enjoyed square dancing with his wife. He was a humble, hardworking, friendly man who never met a stranger. If he knew you, he had probably called you “Chief.” Following retirement, John enjoyed mowing and caring for his properties. He’d never seen a weed that Round Up couldn’t take care of.

Surviving, along with his wife Beverly, are daughters, Donna (Bruce) Harrison of Crawfordsville and Dianna (Brian) Verhey of rural Waynetown; grandchildren, Jeremy Pruett, Dr. Kyle Harrison, ENS, Katelyn Harrison and Derrick (Megan Guthery) Verhey; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Jalynn, Audrie and Kori Pruett and Madalynn Verhey; sisters, Carol Ford of Thorntown, Katrina (Jerry) Whiteside of Lebanon, Theresa (David) Smith of Poland, Indiana, and Karen Vansickle, Debbie Stone and Patsy Lang, all of Lebanon; brothers, Raymond (Cathie) Vansickle of Brownsburg, Wayne (Betty) Vansickle of Whitestown, Francis (Judy) Vansickle of California and Ed Vansickle of New Ross; and sister-in-law Vera Vansickle of Bainbridge.

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter Shelly “Vera” Pruett; brothers, Pete, Charles and Kenny; brother-in-law John Ford; and sister-in-law Suzanne Vansickle. He also was preceded in death by a brother and sister who died in infancy.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dorman Winger officiating. Interment will follow in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Guests are asked to follow the COVID-19 recommendations of the CDC and Indiana State Department of Health.
