The Flower Lovers Garden Club met June 5 at Milligan Park for the annual pitch in luncheon and plant sale.

President Karen Cook called the meeting to order and shared a prayer.

Business items for discussion included the status of downtown flower pots and members who are responsible for maintaining them, and the need for two members to coordinate the 2025 Garden Walk. Awards were given to Sharon Barton for 10 years of membership and Nancy Bowes for 25 years.

Members with June birthdays are Belinda Grimes, Nancy Bowes, Anita Arnold and Dorothy Fogel.

The luncheon was a pitch-in by club members. The picnic tables were decorated with flower arrangements from their flower beds or gardens. Those arrangements were later delivered to the Lane House residents. An assortment of main dishes, salads, fruit and vegetable platters and delicious desserts were enjoyed by all. Priscilla Zachary made fruit kabobs that added an eye catching display to the food table. Hostesses were Anita Arnold, Beth Lowe, Sharon Barton and Janet Linton. Beth Lowe added some excitement to lunch by putting a few numbers on napkins. Members who had a number on their napkin received a homemade smudge stick with plants from her garden. Not only were the smudge sticks beautiful we learned about their cultural significance.

After an enjoyable lunch accompanied by a downpour of rain, the plant auction began. Our animated auctioneers were Karen Cook , Terri Trinkle and Belinda Grimble. Members of the club brought annual and perennial plants and a few saplings. There were also garden related items that were auctioned off. Competitive bidding began and resulted in many of us getting some wonderful plants. The annual plant auction and luncheon never disappoints. Good food and a huge assortment of plants makes this a meeting to look forward to.

The next meeting will be 1 p.m. July 3 in the social room of St. John’s. Steve Cloncs from Pro Green Garden Center will speak about garden maintenance and tips. Guests are always welcome.
