Crunch, a one-year-old calf, escaped Thursday evening from the Montgomery County 4-H Fairgrounds. The 950-pound animal was being moved into a barn when it was startled, dragging an adult handler for a short distance. The bovine then headed towards a wooded ravine adjacent to the fairgrounds. The Smith family who owns the animal were joined by other 4-Hers as well as city and county police officers, city firefighters and Emergency Management Agency personnel in a search for the escapee. The search continued overnight, and drones were also deployed. The animal eluded capture until about 2 p.m. Friday when it was located in a yard near Grace and Mercy Church. Firefighter Colton Meadows was able to get a rope on it and Brandon Miller of Clarks Hill used his horse to herd the calf. Crunch was then loaded onto a trailer and returned home.
