VEEDERSBURG — The Fountain Central volleyball team graduated only a single senior from the team they fielded last fall so it would seem they would put a more experienced squad on the floor this season.
That may not be the case, however, as the team will depend on two seniors for leadership and on defense, but will have sophomores with more limited court time taking the lead offensively.
The team is not a tall team so defense will be the key to success for the squad this fall.
The coaches plan to keep the focus of the team on defensive play in preseason workouts before later adding more work on offensive sets and rotations.
The key word for the team this year will be “consistent.”
Consistent, in this case, means that if a player has an assigned position or role, they need to execute that position or role on every play.
The preseason practices are including a number of competition-type drills with the idea being to build a competitive mindset for use in game situations.
The Mustangs must make use of the preseason to improve as much as possible as every player on the team is in at least two sports over the school year and all but two are in three.
While the players try to get better over the summer, they find their offseason schedules filled to saturation, so these preseason practices will be essential to their improvement.
As of now, after less than a week of practices, the coaches believe the team is on the right track and getting better every day.
