Crawfordsville Police reported on social media they had an “extremely busy” start to the weekend.
A Facebook post made by the CPD on Saturday shared details from three separate traffic pursuits that occurred Friday night and early Saturday morning. The incidents resulted in the arrest of three Crawfordsville residents.
The first traffic pursuit began around 8:44 p.m. Friday, when a CPD officer responded to the area of U.S. 231 and Interstate 74 for a driving complaint. After locating the suspect vehicle, the officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle near the intersection of U.S. 231 and C.R. 300. The vehicle failed to yield to the officer’s emergency lights. The officer activated his emergency sirens, but the vehicle continued southbound on U.S. 231.
The suspect continued to flee until entering the Speedway gas station at U.S. 231 and Industrial Boulevard. The suspect briefly placed her vehicle in park, but then shifted the vehicle into drive again. An additional CPD officer arrived at the scene, blocking the suspect’s escape from the gas station parking lot.
Officers arrested Courtney Shea Williams, 38, of Crawfordsville on charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and legend drug deception, both level 6 felonies. She also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated - by a controlled substance, operating a vehicle while intoxicated - endangerment, public intoxication and reckless driving. Williams was incarcerated in the county jail at 10:33 p.m. Her bond is $1,000.
The second pursuit began at approximately 11:07 p.m. Friday when an officer observed a GMC pickup truck with an expired license plate near the intersection of U.S. 231 South and Purple Heart Parkway.
The officer activated his emergency lights, but the suspect continued driving southbound on U.S. 231. The officer then activated his emergency siren, but the suspect continued to flee. Additional officers were dispatched to assist in the pursuit.
After traveling southbound on U.S. 231 for some time, the fleeing suspect entered the Iron Order Motorcycle Club parking lot. The suspect, who is not affiliated with the club, proceeded toward the rear of the lot. After a few short moments, responding back-up officers arrived on the scene to conducted a felony stop.
The suspect complied at first with officers, but then began to passively resist their verbal commands. While officers provided cover, a separate officer attempted to take the suspected into custody. The suspect then physically resisted the officer by offensively engaging him in an altercation. After a brief struggle, the suspect was subdued in handcuffs.
This incident resulted in the arrest of Dale Ryan Lewis, 62, of Crawfordsville. He faces felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior unrelated conviction, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement causing injury to an officer and a misdemeanor charge of driving while suspended. He was jailed at 2:02 a.m. on a $1,000 bond.
At approximately 2:31 a.m. Saturday, city officers were acting as back-up for a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy who was conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of South Boulevard and Grant Avenue. During the stop, a pickup truck came to a complete stop in the westbound lanes of South Boulevard, east of the Grant Avenue intersection. The pickup remained stopped in the lanes of travel for approximately three minutes.
A city officer on scene at the deputy’s traffic stop went to investigate the pickup further. The pickup proceeded westbound to the intersection of South Boulevard and Grant Avenue, which at the time was a red light. The truck disregarded the traffic signal and proceeded through the intersection without stopping.
The city officer caught up to the pickup near the intersection of State Road 32 and State Road 47 south split. The vehicle slowed to make the curve onto State Road 32 and continued westbound. The officer activated his emergency lights and advised dispatch he was initiating a traffic stop.
The suspect vehicle accelerated to just under 50 miles per hour, without showing intentions to yield to the emergency lights. The officer activated his emergency siren and advised he was in pursuit. The suspect vehicle continued westbound until reaching the Marathon Gas station at 1529 W. State Road 32. The suspect vehicle entered the gas station and a felony stop was conducted.
This incident resulted in the arrest of Kyra Nachelle Burton, 31, of Crawfordsville. She faces a felony charge of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated - endangerment, operating a vehicle while intoxicated - by controlled substance, possession of marijuana and public intoxication. She was jailed at 5:06 a.m. and has a $1,000.
