Lots to do closer to home

Posted

I am so glad I wasn’t anywhere close to an airport last weekend!

A friend who works for Amazon had 15 flights canceled in Los Angeles alone, trying to get back to Indy.

A person my cousin in Minnesota knows had an insane day, with a disruptive passenger causing a diversion, which was followed by crew and plane issues. After getting to Denver, they got stranded and ended up renting a car and driving all the way back to Minnesota.

So, yes, I am glad that I was close to home.

There was softball at Elston, there was Legion baseball in Frankfort, a Fever game in Indy and there was an all-star softball game for TV in Kokomo.

Just hop in the jalopy.

The Fever game was fun to cover, as Caitlin Clark continues to do well. The all-star game was a showcase of 27 new high school grads, with all of these young ladies heading for big-time college softball programs. The computer issues over the weekend caught up to us, as we went off the air for an inning-plus, because the servers went down, and the engineers had a time of getting re-connected.

But the best times were had in covering the Legion team, as they won their regional championship and qualify for the state tournament.

It is the first trip since 2021, when they finished second, and there are plenty of high hopes for this weekend. Seven of the eight teams that are in Terre Haute for the finals were here in Montgomery County two weekends ago for the Post 72 Invitational, so there are lots of familiar faces. Post 72 has wins over several of those teams, so they know they can play with any of them. As it goes with these double-elimination tournaments with the pitching restrictions imposed, it will come down to which team has enough pitching.

So, good luck to Coach Proctor and all the guys. They start on Friday against one of those teams they saw, and defeated, two weekends ago. Their game Saturday will have them against another familiar foe.

They have a game every day starting on Friday, and of course have to win to stay in it. The tournament runs all the way through next Tuesday. They have to play at least five games and there could be a sixth, so that pitching and endurance comment plays out.

I’m going to point the jalopy southwest and cover the team, at least a couple of them on the radio, so it will be a baseball weekend.

There have been calls and emails about football. There is never a week off from football for this guy. Some high school, a little college, some Colts, some other NFL. Always something.

But no airports, at least for this and the next couple weekends. or that, I am so grateful.

If you are flying, good luck. No matter where you go or what you do, enjoy.

Safe travels.
