CDPL staff share October picks

Spooky season has begun and the staff at Crawfordsville District Public Library have some scary and not-so-scary books and movies to help you enjoy the month! Kicking off with a fabulous movie recommendation is Dennis who suggests rewatching (or maybe watching for the first time!) “Beetlejuice” (DVD Fic Bee): “With the sequel out now, I thought it would be the perfect time to revisit this classic from 1988.”

Keeping in the spirit, Susanna recommends reading “And Then You’re Dead: What Really Happens if You Get Swallowed by a Whale, are Shot from a Cannon, or Go Barreling over Niagara” by Cody Cassidy (612.002 Cas): “I’ve selected something macabre from my to-read pile in honor of the season. [This book] is like Randall Munroe’s “What If” (500 Mun) for the morbidly curious.”

Christie says “The Whisper Man” by Alex North (FIC Nor) is “a perfectly chilling book for the season! Leaves you guessing until the end!”

If you are looking for more thrillers, Mary loved “The Perfect Son” by the incredibly popular author Freida McFadden (FIC McFadden): “The perfect family may not be so perfect after all. The handsome athlete son is accused of abducting a local teenage girl. Did he do the unthinkable?” And I recommend “In My Dreams I Hold a Knife” by Ashley Winstead (FIC Win), which contains several secrets and twists to enjoy!

For our large print readers, Dellie suggests “The Forty-Niners: A Novel of the Gold Rush” by William W. Johnstone (LP FIC Johnstone), which “takes you back in time. Enjoyable read! Through fiction we can learn about the past.” She also enjoyed “Kate by the Book” by Susan Page Davis (LP FIC Davis Mainely v.4), which follows a blossoming romance between a children’s librarian and a police officer after a mystery at the library keeps bringing them together.

Finally, what about some fun pumpkin carving and decorating ideas? Marva recommends “Pumpkin Carving” by Ed Palmer (j 745.5941 Pal), which contains 37 fun designs, complete with exact patterns. Try the Ghastly Grimace, Goblin Growl, or Batty Wings!

All these and more are currently on display on the first floor of the library through the end of the month. Come in and check one out with your library card. Many of them are also available to check out digitally on our free Libby app. Our regular open hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday;
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
