Waynetown ready to celebrate Freedom Fest

WAYNETOWN — Waynetown will celebrate America and freedom Saturday during the annual one-day Freedom Fest at the Rev. Guy Tremaine Park.

The day will start at 8 a.m. with breakfast being served. Several food and craft vendors will be open by 11 a.m.

Some of the food available includes: chicken and noodles, hamburgers, hot dogs, pork burgers, barbecue chicken and pork, tacos and breaded tenderloin. The number of food vendors in attendance will be the most ever since the festival began eight years ago.

Carnival games will begin at 11 a.m.

The Waynetown Veterans Memorial display will be set up on the park grounds. Many veterans with ties to Wayne Township will be honored with their pictures and service history displayed. The display is comprised from photos and information compiled by family members. Soldiers who died in combat as well as those who served and came home will be honored. Included in the display is an ace pilot who flew a fighter plane in both World War II and in the Korean Conflict. There are veterans who sustained multiple injuries during combat. The most famous Waynetown veteran is Pvt. William Bratton who participated in the Great Expedition led by Lewis and Clark in 1804 to 1806.

Purple Sound Productions will provide music throughout the day. The Dapper Dan Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. on the Freedom Stage.

A patriotic service will be conducted at 9:40 p.m. on the Freedom Stage. A speaker from the Veterans Memorial Park group will speak about the importance of honoring all veterans. Local Boy Scouts will present colors. Veterans in attendance will be honored and asked to stand when their military branch song is played in a service medley. The program will conclude with the playing of Taps.

Fireworks will commence at dusk with coordinated music being played. The fireworks will be a production of Forman Blasters.
