Posted

DARLINGTON — All three county girls’ golf teams hit the links at Rocky Ridge on Wednesday to determine the 2024 county champion. Southmont walked away with the title, shooting a season-best 167.

North Montgomery also had its best round on their home course at 203, and Crawfordsville finished with a 246.

Hitting another record was Southmont senior, Addison Meadows. The four-time individual county champion shot a two-under par 34.

“I’m very pleased with our performance tonight,” said Southmont Coach Bill Whalen. “We are striking the ball the best we have all season, and I hope that continues into sectional on Saturday. I told the girls we do have some clean-up to do in our short game, but it’s always good to be county champions and earn Southmont some County Chase points.”

Southmont had two golfers shoot their personal best in the match, senior Kelsey Thompson had a 42, and freshman, Maggie Gilliland a 45. Rounding out scoring for the Mounties was sophomore Addison Kendricks with a 46. All four Mounties make the all-county team.

North Montgomery Coach Bob Ryker likes where his team is going into sectional on Saturday.

“I’m very pleased with where our girls are right now,” Ryker said. “We just shot our best score on our home course tonight. We definitely have good momentum going into sectional on Saturday.”

Sophomore Mallory Inskeep led the Lady Chargers with a 42 and landed a spot on the all-county team. Other scoring for the Chargers included, Marlee Reed finished with a 48, Krestyn Bradford had a 55, and Emma Pyle and Kayla Sankey each had a 58.

Crawfordsville Coach Erin Gilland highlighted her senior golfer, Maddie Lewellen, who shot a 72 and is in her first season with the Athenians. Lewellen has Down Syndrome.

“Having Maddie on our team has been awesome,”  Gilland said. “Our team and all the teams we have played have been so good about helping Maddie feel welcome. Maddie is a lot of fun.”

Serenity Wright lead the Athenians with 55, Madisyn Posthauer had a 57, Alexis Shelton had a 64, and Bella Jones a 70.

All three teams now turn their attention to sectional play on Saturday at Harrison Hills.
