Marking Milestones

Mr. and Mrs. White

Posted

David and Alberta Jo (Crowder) White recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. According to the US Census Bureau statistics only one-tenth of one percent of marriages reach 70 years.

They met at the Log Cabin Inn, where Jo was employed as a waitress. David told his friend “that’s the girl I’m going to marry.” Then he left her a 50-cent tip for a five-cent cup of coffee.

After Jo graduated from Waynetown High School, they were married on Aug. 20, 1954, by the Rev. Guy Tremaine in his parsonage. The same pastor had also married Jo’s parents in the 1930s. Their attendants, Don White and Marilou Harris, are still sharing in their celebrations.

David was a chemical processor at Mid-States for 43 years. Jo began her career as a typesetter at the Journal Review. Many readers enjoyed her column “Come On Along.” Readers that perhaps had few opportunities to travel looked forward to the weekly column. She also covered concerts, school activities, local events, rodeos, ice shows, etc. Her favorite assignment was covering the movie, Hoosiers.

David was inducted into the Crawfordsville Bowling Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing golf and even had a hole-in-one and spent many years pitching horseshoes. He still has his impressive collection of trophies. Jo found pleasure maintaining her many flower beds. They both loved vacationing on Sanibel Island. The ocean seemed to wash away their cares and revived their spirits.

They were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 60 rewarding years.

Mr. and Mrs. White were blessed with two daughters, Brenda Jo Nethery (Greg) and Susan LeAnn Ring (Mark).

David and Jo are Purdue, Pacers, Colts and Caitlin Clark fans, and can often be heard cheering very loudly.

The Whites have been blessed with 70 years of marriage and they agree, in a second, that their daughters have been the highlight of their lives.
