NEW MARKET — North Montgomery boys’ tennis team beat county and Sagamore Conference rival Southmont 3-2 on Tuesday. In a game that had the start time delayed due to rain, the Chargers spoiled the Mounties’ senior night.

Winning for the Chargers were singles players Cade Cole and Dane Elliott. Cole, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated Caden Allen 6-4, 6-2. Elliott at No. 3 singles defeated Colton Long 6-1, 6-1.

The other Charger win was by the No. 2 doubles team of Keaton Brown and Cayden Keller who defeated Mikey Hardin and Chazz Long 6-4, 6-0.

The Mounties picked up wins at No. 1 singles when Gavin Downey defeated Beckett Martin 6-3, 6-2. Southmont’s No. 1 doubles team of Owen McCutchan and Dean McGaughey defeated Carter Thompson and Austin Biddle 6-4, 6-3.

Charger coach Devan Plant was happy with the win as the season winds down.

“We will take a win, especially late in the year with the sectional near,” Plant said. “We still have room to improve and we are trying to get everyone healthy.”

The Mounties were playing with a heavy heart for their coach Nathan Poynter. The coach’s father, Basil Poynter, died Saturday after a short illness. The coach came to watch his squad play as a spectator.

Basil Poynter coached Southmont tennis while his son was a star player for the Mounties. His funeral was held Wednesday.

Mountie Assistant Coach Joe McCutchan, who took over the reins on Tuesday, said his team battled in all the sets and he was pleased with the effort he saw on the court.

“I thought we gave a great effort and it ended up being a great night for tennis,” McCutchan said. “Gavin Downey played fantastic and it was his best match of the year. Gavin was our shining star tonight.”

North Montgomery (7-9, SAC 3-3) picked up two County Chase points and played at Western Boone on Wednesday. They will travel to Attica today.

Southmont plays at Lebanon today.

Sectionals in Indiana are scheduled for Oct. 1-3.
