Girls soccer has talent in all positions

NEW MARKET — Angie Williams smiles as she gazes over her roster.

The former Southmont girls soccer assistant coach takes over the head coaching reigns in 2024. Despite losing six seniors and a goalkeeper, who transferred to another school, she likes the talent that takes the pitch.

“Several players have been asked to shift into new positions and have happily jumped in and done a great job in their new roles,” Williams said. “We have a great group of girls this year and I couldn’t be more proud of how well they are doing.”

Sophomore Makinzie Wood takes over in goal. Leading scorer Jessica Hale returns for her senior campaign. She tallied 24 points for a 10-7 (3-4 Sagamore Conference) squad in 2023.

Other key returners are sophomore Molly Williams on offense. On the defensive side Claire Kessler, Cloe Blankenship, Neveah Ward, Ali Brown and Kieara Sanchez bring experience. Jada Graves and Emily Link, the latter moves to defense this season, also are being counted on as leaders. In addition, several freshmen will see major minutes.

Williams coached most of the girls in junior high for two years as well. The talent is spread wide.

“We have a lot of young players and they are doing a great job of working hard and learning to play together as a team,” Williams said. “The goalie and the forwards sometime seem to be the ones who get most of the credit, but this team has really talented players in every position.

The Mounties open the season Aug. 19 at Faith Christian.
