Hale breaks Southmont school record

Southmont’s Jessica Hale broke the school scoring record in a game with eight goals against South Vermillion on Saturday. The Mountie girls won the game 14-0.

Southmont coach Angela Williams complimented Hale for claiming a place in the school’s history.

“I was happy for Jessica to have the opportunity to make her mark on Southmont’s record board,” Williams said. “(South Vermillion) put several defenders on (Jessica) and she still was able to dribble around them and get to the goal. Jessica is an exceptional person on and off the field.”

Mountie Mollie Williams also had a big game with five assists which is just one short of another school record.

Southmont’s Jada Groves had a hat trick with three goals of her own and Kaelynn Sanburn added two goals.

Mountie Madisen Bensen had three assists and Ali Brown, Emily Link, and Sanburn each record one assist apiece.

Southmont will conclude their regular season in a Sagamore Athletic Conference match at home against Lebanon on Wednesday.

 

Chargers lose to Trojans

North Montgomery’s girls’ soccer team lost to Covington 2-0 on Saturday.

Covington scored one goal in each half. Bre Batley scored in the 38th minute of the first half and Chloe Whittington scored in the 59th minute.

Batley’s goal enabled her to extend her scoring streak to eight straight games.

The game was senior day for the Chargers as they said thank you to seniors Ella Smith, Ava Nunan and Callie Wright.

The Chargers played at home against Faith Christian on Monday and will complete the regular season with a trip to Rossville on Thursday. Covington played North White on Monday in their last regular season game.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

South has success at Bison Stampede

Southmont’s boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams had successful results at the Bison Stampede at Benton Central.

The boys’ harriers placed second overall against 14 teams

Leading the way for the Mounties was Vince Reimondo who finished eighth with a time of 17:37.

Other Southmont runners times were Ethan Keck 18:14, Trent Reeves 18:39, Samuel Crum 18:55 and Paxton Burris 19:53.

The girls’ team finished fourth overall and were led by Darby Cottrell’s time of 22:50.

Other Mountie times were Amarah Shannon 24:10, Lennon Woods 25:21, Mariena Trutweine 26:46 and Kylee Reeves 31:48.

Next up for Southmont is the Nike Valley Twilight in Terre Haute.

 

Chargers compete at Benton Central

Both North Montgomery’s cross country teams participated in the Bison Stampede at Benton Central on Saturday.

The girls’ team tied for sixth place out of 13 teams.

North’s Sarah Hopper finished in 11th with a time of 22:52. Katelyn Woolwine completed in the course in 24:47 and Avery Gaylor finished in 27:02. Zoey McFarland ran a 27:14 and Lucia Southwood finished in a time of 37:30.

In the boys’ race the Chargers finished in ninth out of 14 teams.

Leading the way for North Montgomery was Jack Rogers who finished with a 17:39 which was good for ninth place individually.

Other Charger times were Nolan Yarger 19:42, Kale Mitchell 20:08, Blake Welch 20:24 and Laws Connor in 21:11.

The Chargers are off until Saturday when they compete in the Nike Valley Twilight in Terre Haute.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Athenians go 1-1 on Saturday

The Crawfordsville volleyball team played in the Clinton Central Invitational on Saturday and came home with a 1-1 record.

In the first game, Crawfordsville lost to Herron of Indianapolis 2-1. The Athenians lost the first set 25-22 and came back to win the second set 25-22. The deciding set was 17-15 in favor of Herron.

Athenian Ally Strickland had eight kills and Ellie Walker recorded four aces.

Crawfordsville was able to rebound in their second game by defeating Clinton Central 2-1. Game scores were 25-21, 18-25 and 17-15.

Strickland and Reece Price each had 10 kills. Price also had 14 digs.

Crawfordsville will travel today to Western Boone.
