WEST LAFAYETTE — Southmont senior Addison Meadows has advanced to her fourth consecutive girls’ golf state finals which begins Friday.

Meadows shot a 74, which enabled her to place third on a wet and windy Saturday. The South golfers finished 11th out of a tough 15-team field.

Mountie coach Bill Whalen was pleased with his team and spoke about the competition in the regional.

“I believe this is the toughest regional in the state,” Whalen said. “I am very proud of this team and Addison for making it to the state tournament. It is obviously a great accomplishment for Addison.”

Meadows said preparation throughout the season helps her in the big meets.

“Practice always pays off and the tournaments we play in during the season helps prepare us for bigger meets,” Meadows said. “I feel experience throughout the season helps us get ready.”

Being able to perform well in the sectional and regional makes all the work Meadows puts in year round worth it.

“It makes me feel accomplished,” Meadows said. “Coming in freshman year I was a little scared. Ever since then I have just tried to put as much work in as I can to do the best that I can.”

Other Mounties scores were Kelsy Thompson 105, Maggie Gilliland 106, Addison Kendricks 111 and Kate Myers 123.

Reflecting on the season, Whalen enjoyed coaching his team.

“It was fun to coach this team,” he said. “They understood my sarcastic personality and gave it right back to me. We all will be cheering on Addison in the state finals now.”

North Montgomery’s team also competed in the regional. Scores for the Chargers were Mallory Inskeep 105, Marlie Reed 113, Krestyn Bradford 135, Kayla Sankey 144 and Alannis Garcia 152.

Charger coach Bob Ryker was pleased his team was playing in the regional and admits the Chargers probably excelled more than he imagined. He also said his team will gain from the experience.

“We were not supposed to make it to the regional, but the team put their minds to it and made it happen,” Ryker said. “We did not play our best but at the end of the day, we were there. The experience of being at a regional for the younger golfers will be huge for next season. Our seniors for their leadership and contributions, they have set a strong foundation for the future.”

Addi Kooi of Westfield shot a 4-under par of 70 to finish as the meet medalist.
