North meal prices to increase

Posted

North Montgomery Community School Corporation students will have a slight increase in breakfasts and lunches in the 2024-25 school year.

On Monday, the school board approved the news prices. Breakfast for all students will be $1.45. Lunches will cost $2 at the elementary schools and $2.15 at the middle and high schools.

Superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran said that a survey of local schools was taken as part of the process to raise the prices. Moran provided information to the board members indicating their prices remain one of the lowest in the area.

The board approved to pay the corporation’s property and liability insurance premium of $310,032 which is 22% higher than one year ago. The corporation has started the process to search for insurance at a lesser cost.

Changes to the student and staff handbooks were updated. Student use of cell phones will now be further limited. Elementary students must keep their phones in their backpacks. Middle school students must keep their phones in their lockers except during lunch. High school students will be allowed to use phones during passing periods and lunch. The changes represent a “tightening” of the policy, Moran said.

The board approved the retirement of long-time high school administrative assistant Mary Weliver.

Resignations were accepted for middle school special education teacher Nancy Borta and middle school English teacher Katie Burris. The board also accepted the resignation of middle school assistant principal Laura Bowman.

Several new hires were approved by the board. Lee Douma will teach high school business education; Weston Steele will teach English at the middle school; Lauren Jeges-Seitz was hired as assistant food service director for the district; Kristi Mangold was hired at the administrative assistant/bookkeeper at Sugar Creek Elementary; and Kayle Risner was hired as an administrative assistant at the high school.

In other business, the board approved:

• A leave of absence for Matt Merica from July 15 to Aug. 2.

• The use of the high school swimming pool from Oct. 20 to Dec. 28 by the Fountain Central High School swim team for practice.
