Mounties to use 2023 as building block for future

Southmont boys tennis is going to look a lot different in 2023 than they did a season ago. The Mountie will have a nearly completely different roster after graduating seniors Adam Cox, Luke Tesmer, Harrison Haddock, Mason Hall, and Caden Jones. For Southmont coach Nathan Poynter he brings in a fresh new team that will look to grow and gain experience in 2023.

“We’re down and that’s just the cycle of how things go,” Poynter said. “We’re going to have a group of 10 kids who are going to be fighting year round for seven spots. With that being said we’ve got some young kids on this team who are good athletes and that does excite me about the future. This year we’re going to take our fair share of lumps and bruises. I’m hoping that we can keep the mentality of the kids up and not have them feel defeated. Every player has start learning the game somewhere and that’s our goal this year.”

Even with the down season there’s still goals that Poynter and his team wants to accomplish this year. Even with taking the lumps and bruises as Poynter mentioned, that will only help this young Mountie team as they use this season as a learning experience and build for the future.

“There’s still some teams on our schedule that we can be competitive with,” Poynter said. “Whether we come out on top remains to be seen, but you hope to see that from these guys this year and we being able to pull off some wins. There’s going to be some tough times with this group but it’s all about pushing through it and being better and brighter on the other side.”
