Letter: Reader disputes Miller’s position

Posted

Father Alexis Miller’s guest column“Why the ruling class hates Donald Trump” published July 26 contains a number of inaccuracies.

The first is in the title. The ruling class does not hate Donald Trump. If we define the ruling class as members of Congress, then the ruling class is divided. Note that Trump was acquitted by the Senate in both impeachments, suggesting that he has strong support among the ruling class. The Indiana state government is also on Trump’s side. If we define the ruling class as those with incomes over $100,000, then 54% of the ruling class voted for Trump in 2020.

The second inaccuracy is calling the 2020 election “a historically tainted and questioned election.” Trump’s legal team failed to provide any evidence that the election was tainted. In fact, Fox News paid Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million to settle its defamation suit, and Rudy Giuliani’s law license was suspended in 2021. The only thing historic about the 2020 election is the fact that the loser refused to concede.

Another inaccuracy is that the column fails to mention the real reason that people hate Trump: his attempt to subvert the Constitution and remain in power in spite of the fact that he lost the election. Trump knew that he lost but tried to remain in power anyway. (For a detailed account of this, see Liz Cheney’s book “Oath and Honor.”) Given his past behavior there is no reason to expect that he would respect the will of the people in the future.
