Benchmark Family Services held its first-ever back-to-school giveaway event Sunday at Pike Place. Jessica Ryker said Benchmark raised $12,700 in school supplies in just more than three weeks. Next year they plan to start sooner and raise at least $25,000 in school supplies. Chandler Scaggs, 9, of Darlington, raised more than $1,000 in school supplies on his own and was presented with a certificate of excellence by Benchmark staff. Several community organizations and vendors were on hand to assist families.
