Montgomery County Commissioners proclaimed this week as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The proclamation read Monday during their regular meeting states the importance of 911 workers to residents.

Commissioner Jim Fulwider, who has nearly 30 years of working for the Crawfordsville Fire Department, reiterated the good job the 15 employees at the local communication center do on behalf of the county.

“Sometimes these people are unseen and overlooked,” Fulwider said. “We are thankful for what they do.”

In 2022, the dispatch center staff answered 68,277 calls and 1,474 texts. A total of 15,853 calls were requests for a first responder.

The local dispatch center serves 13 law enforcement agencies, 10 fire agencies and 11 EMS agencies.

Montgomery County Surveyor Tom Cummins asked commissioners for the budgeted funds for the continuing work to locate cornerstones. The amount requested and approved was $2,800.

Commissioners passed a new ordinance for county highway policies. The new ordinance was created to have a written policy of why and how the highway department maintains roads and conducts snow removal.

Topics included are paving, chip sealing, gravel road maintenance, speed limits and snow removal. Although the actions described in the ordinance have been followed for several years, this is the first time the policies have been written. The new ordinance can be found on the county’s website.

Montgomery County Administrator Tom Klein reported repair work on Constitution Row is scheduled to begin April 17 and it will take 10-12 working days to complete.

Commissioners’ next meeting is 8 a.m. April 24.
