Sunday’s performance geared for children

Members of the Montgomery County Civic Band will wrap up the 60th annual summer concert season Sunday with tunes to thrill the young and the young-at-heart.

The hour-long performance begins at 3 p.m. in the gazebo on the grounds of Lane Place.

Gary Ketchum, band director, said the final performance of the season is always bittersweet. However, this one will be even more so, since it will be his last leading the local musicians.

Ketchum has served 18 years as the band director and will pass the baton back to Cindy McCormick who led the civic band for 17 years prior to Ketchum. He plans to continue with the band as a musician.

The band will open with the “Star Spangled Banner,” then concert-goers will enjoy tunes from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Andrew Bowers will play “Classical Gas” on the guitar. His performance will be followed by “Who’s That Masked Man,” “The Bear Necessities” and “Creepy Classics.”

Other Disney favorites from the Lion King and Aladdin will entertain the crowd.

Ketchum plans to wow the crowd as he plays a tune while dissembling his clarinet.

As always, the concert will end with the playing of “Stars and Stripes,” and children will be invited to direct the band. Ketchum will give out prizes to children following the performance.

Concert-goers are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair to Sunday’s performance. Free-will donations will be accepted. Proceeds help the band purchase music for future seasons.
