Jayden Azar, right, a senior at Purdue University, spoke about “Artificial Intelligence” at the Crawfordsville Rotary Club meeting. Azar spent time trying to explain how this was going to be a part of our lives. She pointed out that some jobs such as marketing, social media and entry level data analysis will become obsolete. Kezia Blackwell, a member of the Crawfordsville chapter of Tri Kappa, spoke to the Crawfordsville Rotary Club at their noon meeting. Tri Kappa is an Indiana sorority for women that was started in 1901 .The Crawfordsville chapter was started in 1937. There are 142 active chapters and 94 associate chapters in the state.. Tri Kappa has charity, culture and education as their goal for the community. The local chapter has been a continuous donor to Riley Hospital and their major fundraiser in the community is the Daddy-Daughter Dance.
Blackwell Guest Speaker at Rotary
Members of the Byron Cox Unit 72 American Legion Auxiliary will be accepting donations from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 24 at the Breakfast Co. in honor of National Poppy Day. All proceeds are used to assist veterans. However, a donation is not required to receive a poppy. The poppy was established as the official flower of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1921 following World War I. The flower is a symbol that honors all veterans of the armed forces, and their families, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the unique freedoms Americans enjoy daily. Auxiliary members pictured, in no particular order, are Carol Roberts, second vice president; Rosemary Hutchison, poppy chair and chair for the Indiana Veterans Home; Cindy Biddle, poppy committee; Sharon Barton; Sheila Davidson, incoming corresponding secretary on July 1; and Mary Jane Renick, incoming president on July 1. Veterans and past commanders in the back row are Joe Barton, Linn Hutchison and Dale Wilson. Not pictured are Shannon Switzer, treasurer; Kristy Byers, membership and first vice president; Angel Cooper and Meadow Pitts, poppy committee; and Marc Gabel, Post 72 commander. Symbols of Remembrance

Karyn Douglas was named the 2024 Making Democracy Work award winner. This award, presented by the League of Women Voters of Montgomery County, recognizes individuals in our community who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to improving our democracy. Douglas worked in the Montgomery County Clerk’s office for 17 years. For the past seven years, she has been the elected Montgomery County Clerk. She was tireless in making sure our elections were well run and fair. She now serves as City Clerk of Crawfordsville. The plaque hangs in the Carnegie Museum for all to see.

Hoover Elementary competed in the state Math Bowl Competition last month at Thorntown Elementary School. There was a lot of good competition this year. Hoover Team 1, which was made up of all fifth graders, took first place in the Orange Division. Hoover Team 2, which was made up of all fourth graders, came in third place in the Orange Division.
