Tox Away Day slated for Saturday

Posted

This year’s Tox Away Day is set for Saturday.

The annual event provides Montgomery County residents a way to safely dispose of hazardous materials. Items will be collected from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Crawfordsville High School this year.

Many items may be dropped off at no charge. Free items include: auto antifreeze, fuels, oil and oil filters, vehicle batteries, rechargeable batteries, hearing aid batteries and appliances.

Many types of electronics, such as DVD and VCR players, cell phones, blenders, vacuums and radios, may be dropped off at no charge.

Household cleaners and fluorescent tubes are also on the free list. Oil-based paint may be dropped off, however, latex paint is not allowed because it is water-based. Latex paint needs to be mixed with kitty litter and allowed to dry. Since latex paint is not hazardous it can be collected by local trash pickup services.

There will be a fee of up to $25 for televisions, which will be based on size.

The first four auto or truck tires will be collected for free, then $5 each for up to four additional tires. Farm tires over 54 inches may be dropped off for $75 each or tires can be cut into quarters and the fee will be reduced to $5 per tire.

Items that are not allowed include: furniture, mattresses, grills, mowers, satellite dishes, VHS tapes, trash, alkaline batteries, aluminum, firearms, explosives, Asbestos, lumber, roofing shingles and siding.

Lab chemicals, containers over five gallons, cylinders and smoke alarms also are not allowed.

Fees may be paid in cash or checks made out to NuGenesis.

There will be help available for those dropping off items at the site. Follow the signs to the check-in point and drivers will be directed to drop off areas.

Tox Away Day is offered by the Montgomery County Solid Waste Management District.
