FSC enjoy new adventures, new friends and new canoes

Posted

The Friends of Sugar Creek recently held its Family Friendly Float Trip, launching 47 adults and children, many first-time canoers, on the 4-mile water trail from the launch at the old Coke Plant to Rock River Ridge Trailhead.

With nervous excitement paddlers carefully loaded their gear into the new canoes, double checking knots and life jackets, while FCS members offered paddling tips and words of encouragement. As the morning unfolded, friendships were forged as everyone enjoyed swimming, crinoid hunting and the scenic views of Sugar Creek.

A few days later and taking the same water trail, FSC hosted 18 canoers for the Farmers Focused Float from the Montgomery County Soil and Water Department. Sam Lovold and Alan Clouser were commended for their efforts carrying in three tires and pieces of scrap metal littering the creek. Others carried in various cups, cans and debris, cleaning the creek as they paddled.

This group of farmers demonstrated their commitment to preserving the natural resources and ensuring a cleaner environment for all. The event not only beautified the local waterway but also strengthened community bonds and highlighted the importance of stewardship in safeguarding the ecosystem for future generations.

This year’s annual float trips were extra special, being maiden voyages for 10 new canoes, purchased with a generous grant received from Montgomery County Community Foundation.  The new canoes will enhance the recreational experiences and allow the FSC to safely offer water excursions free to the public.
