A fire Tuesday morning heavily damaged a rural Crawfordsville home.

Crawfordsville firefighters were dispatched at 8:03 a.m. to a single-family home at 3405 N. C.R. 100W.

Crawfordsville Fire Chief Scott Busenbark said when crews were enroute to the fire and had reached U.S. 231 and Plank Road they could see heavy smoke, so additional help was requested from Coal Creek, Madison Township and Waynetown fire departments.

The three volunteer departments aided Crawfordsville with tankers and manpower to help douse the fire in the brick, ranch style home. Property records show the home is owned by Phillip and Jill Davis.

Busenbark said upon their arrival, one of home’s occupants was outside of the residence. The other was not there at the time of the fire. He added that firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames in the area of the attached garage.

“We went into the home for an interior attack at that point,” Busenbark said. “We had six firefighters inside hitting the fire, but then the fire broke through the garage roof and was running through the attic of the home, so we pulled the firefighters out so they would not become trapped and began our defensive attack for about 10 minutes.”

Once the fire was under control, crews returned to the inside of the structure to begin pulling down the ceiling to gain access to the fire that was still burning in the attic.

It took firefighters just over an hour to extinguish the blaze. Busenbark initially had 12 firefighters on the scene and called in six more to relieve them and to help with the overhaul.

Crews remained at the scene until about 11:30 a.m.

A cause and origin of the fire has not yet been determined. A representative with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to arrive Wednesday to investigate the fire.

No injuries were reported.
