Experienced roster to lead Mountie volleyball

Posted

NEW MARKET — Returning experience will lead the Southmont Volleyball team in the 2024 season. Six of the eight players on the varsity roster all have varsity experience as Southmont looks to improve from last season.

Leading the Mounties will be seniors Jenna Grino, Catie Himes and Mallory Mason. Grino and Mason lead the 2023 Mounties in digs and assists, respectively, and will be called upon to lead the team in those areas.

“Our seniors are the backbone of the team, bringing experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of the game. They’ve set a great example for the younger players through their work ethic and commitment,” Southmont Coach Erin Barry said. “I see them leading by example on and off the court.”

Barry sees all eight varsity players making an impact this season. Returning for their second year of varsity experience will be juniors, Kenzie Douglas and Kendall Priebe, as well as sophomore, Layla Gomez. New faces for the Mounties will be freshmen, Ella Barry and Kaylee Turner.

“Our entire varsity roster all have a role to play in our team being successful,” Barry said. “We want to play a well-rounded game on both offensive and defense this year. I believe our true impact will come from our collective effort as a team.”

The Mounties will open their season Aug. 20 with a home match against North Vermillion.
