Heading into this girls golf season which has already been underway for a few weeks now, Crawfordsville remains optimistic and they have reasons to be. The Athenians brings back a majority of its roster from a year ago and has a few new additions.

Along with senior captain Carli Payne, Nancy Blanchard, Gabby Warren and Ada Hutson return to the team. Crawfordsville has some newcomers as well, including Southmont transfer Madisyn Posthauer, sophomore Emery Allen and Ciara Wilke.

The Athenians have already been in action and have seen success. They began the year with a 423 at the Seeger Invite before earning a second place finish at the McCutcheon Invite with a 386.

“These girls are great kids first and foremost and it’s a great group this year,” coach Tony Thomas said. “They’re always geared up and ready to go and they have to be with how short the season is. We’ve had some days where we’ve supposed to had an off day and they’re already talking about when they’ll be out on the course again.”

Some upcoming big meets for the Athenians are Aug. 19 when they compete in the Southmont Invite at the Crawfordsville Country Club and Sept. 9 when they’ll be back at the CCC for the Sagamore Conference meet. Just four days later on Sept. 13, Crawfordsville will host the county meet at the Crawfordsville Municipal Golf Course. Rounding out the big meets on the schedule will be Sept. 16 at Harrison Hills for the sectional.

“They’ve done a real good job at identifying already what they need to do get better and as a coach, you can’t ask for much better than that,” Thomas said. “We know that we can drive the ball off the tee pretty well but it comes down to can we chip and putt well. That’s where we can’t be leaving strokes out there.”
